2013 Governor's Enviromental Stewardship Award

2013 was an excellent year for Smart Trips. In January, the program was named Best In Category and received a Gold Medal overall in the Center for Urban Transportation Research's Race to Excellence. In the race, Transportation Demand Organizations (TDMs) from across the U.S. and Canada submit information about their marketing, communications and promotional efforts. In May, we were notified by the Association for Commuter Transportation that we had been selected to present at its July 2013 annual conference. In June, Smart Trips was honored with a Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award for its contributions to improving Tennessee's environment. (The photo to the left shows my colleagues and me at the ceremony.)

Smart Trips Commuter Challenges

Each year I planned a Commuter Challenge aimed at increasing participation among Knoxville businesses such as Scripps Networks, TVA, Oak Ridge National Labs and the University of Tennessee. I developed themes, taglines, assisted with web page development, handled social media and planned the post-Challenge reception to honor the winners. (That's me on the far left presenting a big check.) Each year was approached differently. In 2013, I developed an idea for a YouTube video and oversaw its production by an outside agency.

Best Workplaces for Commuters Awards

Businesses meeting specific requirements can earn status as Best Workplaces for Commuters. I helped with their applications to the National Center for Urban Transportation Research and planned the awards ceremony where they were recognized. Both the Knoxville City and Knox County mayors were invited and attended. I handled media relations for the event including press releases, announcements on social media and interviews on local television.
